Our School Mascot
By Janet Calvert

Edelweiss, better known as "Kitty-Pooh," is the mascot of Bruce Street School for the Deaf. He is a white, blue-eyed Persian who loves to climb into his bag for the ride to school. He visits school from time to time and attends many of our special activities.

One of his favorite days is School Picture Day. He has his school pictures taken when we have ours taken! On School Picture Day, Kitty-Pooh comes to school, waits with a class and has his picture taken, too. The owner of the portrait studio always makes sure the photographers understand that our school mascot is a member of the class, and he cautions them to take enough time to get a great school picture! Kitty-Pooh hands in an order envelope with the other students, and when his pictures come back, everyone is excited to see this year's portrait! Kitty-Pooh

Kitty-Pooh Kitty-Pooh enjoys visiting our different classrooms and sitting in on our lessons. The students always love to have him attend their classes! He also comes for special activities, such as Halloween. One year he came as a witch's "familiar." No one cared that most "familiars" are black. Kitty-Pooh marched in the costume parade and then attended the Halloween party afterwards.

Perhaps our students put it best. Here is what they have collaboratively written about their school mascot:

Kitty-Pooh is our school mascot. His name is Edelweiss. His nickname is Kitty-Pooh. He is a white furry, fluffy cat. He has blue eyes. He likes to rest and sleep. He is handsome and nice to be with. Kitty-Pooh is deaf. He learns by looking at things like we do. Kitty-Pooh can sit up and wave his paw. He likes to catch the food in someone's hand. He wears a neat uniform (tie) for everyday. It is the same tie we wear on our school uniforms. Kitty-Pooh is very smart because he can see our sign language and maybe he knows some of what we say. Why is Kitty-Pooh our school mascot? He is our school mascot because he is deaf just like we are!

New Things on the Site

In case you missed the announcements on the boards, here is a list of some features that have been added to the site over the past month!

  • After many requests over the years, we are now partially archiving the bulletin boards. Please understand... we have limited server space, so we will only archive a small percentage of bulletin board threads.
  • As you all know, we currently display the birthdays of the month in the Clubhouse area. Now that information is available in a second location. If you go to the Private Messages area and look at your Address Book, you will see that along with your friends' names and chat names, their birthdays are listed as well. (By the way, if you see someone with a blank birthday, it is because they have not provided us with that info.)
  • There is something new and fun on the Games page. Feel like writing a funny story? Then play MeowLibs!
