Vet can not give why answer so here it goes!

Some say to get full blood work done on kittens wanting to breed before you give shots because there is a possibility of getting false positives and false negatives due to the vaccine.

Some say it does not matter!

I believe it should be done prior to, does anyone have facts on this, please!?

We always do the Elisa Snap Test before giving the first vaccines especially for the FELV vaccine.

Once you give the vaccine it comprimising the results because you are adminstering exactly what you would be checking for...........
especially the FELV because it is a modified live vaccine.

I was told that if the cat or kitten has the right titers, they don't need the vaccinations, and the bloodwork would tell you if they need the shots?

Some vets say cats don't need the shots every year, but every 2+ years.  I'm at a loss, and paranoid about my cats catching anything, so information would most appreciated, across the board!

I would/will never give the FELV vaccine.  Too much of a risk to me.

Julie I just wanted clarification myself on this matter so I asked Allie's specialist.  The 3/combo vaccines are given out 1st year and then again 1 year later.  Thereafter, National (AVMA) protocol is every 3 years.  Yes, I agree with you even after the 3 years is up, the cat will be 5 years old at this time, I prefer to have the titer blood test done, rather than just having them vaccined again.

I lost my beloved blue silver mackeral tabby Perisan Andrew Phillip King to VAS (vaccine acquired sacroma) he got from his feline leumemia shot. It was due to the preseravtives in the injection. I have not given any of my kitties this injection since. They are all indoor kitties and are not exposed to other kitties or children.

I'm wondering, is it common to vaccinate against felv regularly? I've never given Aloha this vaccine, she is an indoor only cat that is never exposed to other cats, so I figure she just doesn't need it. What would be the reasoning for giving the felv vaccine to indoor only cats? Am I missing something?  :?

Since we have lots of members from different countries, I think it would be interesting to hear about vaccination protocols around the world. In the US has the AVMA protocol (every 3 years) become the norm or are there still many vets that vaccinate annually? In Portugal, or at least in the Azores, the one year protocol is still the most common. Mamacats, is that true for mainland Portugal as well?

I'm also curious about the titer tests Celeste mentioned. Do many of you run blood titer tests before vaccinating?

Gabbycat, I'm so sorry for your loss.  Sad
