It's such a hard question to answer really because cats all have different coats and that usually requires different shampoos. Some kitties are greasey some have silky coats some have cottony coats some have sensitive skin and so on.
For just a "basic" shampoo Biogroom has has some good pet shampoos, you can look them up online and compare prices. The most important thing with ANY shampoo or conditioner is RINSING RINSING RINSING!! Did I say RINSING?? I would also buy small quanitities at first and try the shampoo or conditioner out on your cat to see if it works for them.

Off course, I agree with Linda, just wanted to add.
I have 2 cats with as totally different coats as it is possible and I have many shampoos to experiment with. Actually so far the best one that works great for both cats was shampoo with conditioner from Petsmart - it is in transparent tube and has light blue-green color, I can look it up on their website later.

Mane N Tail is a really good protein shampoo which I think is great for a normal maintenance bath to keep the coat in healthy condition.

why not ask at your local petstore and see what they reccommend I love to learn about new products or products that work well for other people but, I prefer to get my "hints" and recommendations from other people who groom persians on a regular basis than someone who works at a pet store.

Unfortunately the people who work in Petsmart don't really know anything about pets...or most other large chain pet stores....it is very frustrating....they should be trained.
Best to stick to the advice of the experts here!

This is the shampoo I really liked on my both cats although it seems to be expensive for routine use with multiple cats. I used many others but this seems to be the best and you also can wash their face with it because it's tearless. But I don't know whether you want to coat to be really soft because this shampoo really softens any coats (at least with my cats who have different coats). http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754344

Oh I agree there Tracy, my tabby doesn't even have a cottony coat but I really like that shampoo on him too. It's a nice light shampoo doesn't weigh down their coats I find. I have not tried the conditioner though (note to self).

I use Equiss shampoo (I don't have conditioner, so I use a human one) on my cats but I wouldn't use it for the show. The one from Petsmart works much better (to my taste, off course) but it is also much more expensive but it doesn't require additional conditioner - oh, well, seems like my math is not very good lately In the past I used Ring5 shampoos and loved them. I'm going to get one. I recently bought on-line Ring5 cat conditioner but... it came out spray "leave-in", you don't rinse it... not what I want. But I'll give it a try.

Actually I use the Egyss for part of my tabby's show bath - as I said he doesn't have a cottony coat - so I don't want a heavy shampoo weighing it down and I find the Egyss a great show bath shampoo for him.

My breeder recommended Sebolux. I haven't ordered yet, but planning to.
