Hello,
Can anyone tell me if it is ok to feed cats(not as there main diet) cooked turkey or chicken?Does cooking it make it loose some of its nutritional value? Is it bad for them?I had read on another post somewhere to never feed raw chicken or turkey...so I am a little confused.
I have been giving mine cooked turkey ground up a couple times a week, and my one girl is finally putting on some weight.
My concern is 2 of my other females are pregnant, and so not sure if I should be doing this? What started out a what I thought was a harmless treat-They love! I just don't know if it is ok for them.

The whole thing confuses me too to be honest.

I give Ginger raw chicken breast and liver (she won't eat it by herself if it is cooked) but I always freeze it first.

I am pretty sure cooked turky and chicken is fine but i'm no expert! One will be along shortly to help you out i'm sure Smiley

I give Julian cooked turkey and cooked chicken along with other "good natural homemade" stuff and - but I keep my fingers crossed Cheesy - he is an extremely healthy and active and athletic and good looking Cheesy and huge kitten. He is no way overweight (just big, big-boned, big-headed and muscular) and at 6.5 months he weights almost 8 pounds.

I'm sure this food is good for cats.

And I did much research on cats food lately (how to feed them right), and now I'm even more sure it is a good food... unless you keep the nutritional balance which I have to do because my kitties are on homemade food only with almost no cats food at all.

Hi Thank you for sharing, do you add vitamines like the kitty bloom to the cooked turkey and chicken? My cats still have the dry Instinct raw grain free food in feeders to munch on in between.I just cannot get my cats to eat raw food for anything.I have even tried to use the afadopholis(sp?) so it doesn't go right through them , and they will not touch the stuff. If I cook steak, chicken turkey and sometimes pork chops- they will eat it until it is all gone.....so I don't know.
I was tld by a veteran breeder it is the hormones and antibiotics you don't want them eating, and the chemical that makes you tired in turkey is not good for them...so I don't know what to think at all now.
lol!
Just don't want to do anything to jeprodize the kittens , as long as I can help it.
Thank you,
Denise

Since my both cats are on homemade food I have lots of vitamins and supplements at home but I'm very careful in using it. Excess of even one vitamin is not good at all. But I always add taurine paste into cooked fish.

I use Hartz cats vitamins ($3+ in Wallmart and $10 in Safeway Cheesy ), Skin and Coat formula ($3+ in Wallmart and about $10 in Petsmart  ), Felovit II with Taurine paste, yeast.

My both cats absolutely adore raw beef. I buy I believe Angus beef in Raleys with the label "no antibiotics, no hormones" etc., so I do not worry about this stuff. My boyfriend (who is a real specialist in food due to his profession) says that raw turkey or chicken may have salmonella, so it's better to be on the safe side and cook them.

Julian didn't like raw meat at first, so I just mixed it with his other food. It took him a few weeks to realize how delicios the beef is Cheesy . Santana was on RC Persian till 7.5 months, and he loved all homemade food at once and refused to eat his dry kibles Cheesy . But raw beef is probably still his favourite - he started eating it right the minute I put it into Julian's plate Cheesy

NO PORK FOR KITTIES! I know from the past that pigs and cats have one kind of bacteries, so if the pig had them, the kitty may get poisoned and even die. But I also read much on the internet that cooked pork is also a "no-no", just do not remember why.

I give my cats farmer's cheese from Russian grocery store (low-fat no salt), oatmeal, rice (started recently), cooked fish with taurine (once in a while, mainly catfish), mashed potatoes (no salt, no butter), cooked turkey, cooked chicken, cooked egg yorks (mix with food), catsmilk - maybe I forgot something.

I was advised to give baby food to Santana to help him to gain weight... well, Santana does everything Julian does (monkey see, monkey do). First day Julian ate this baby food, and Santana did too (I give 2 plates, and they both eat first from one plate together, then from another one). Another day Julian decided he didn't like it anymore, so Santana refused to eat it...  :?

I used to buy turkey breasts and cook them for a few minutes in the microwave. My black smoke girl had one dish full every day for nearly 19 years, she wouldn't eat canned cat food. She also had cat biscuits.

She thrived on it!

My 2 I have now will not touch turkey, but I give them raw best steak mince or raw braising steak chopped up small every day, they love it.

My niece feeds her cats cooked coley fish every day, I told her it was bad for them, but she pointed out Pheobe, her rescue cat which was deliberately driven over when a kitten, and had so many broken bones the vets didn't know if she'd survive, has just celebrated her 19th birthday and is still going strong!

NO It was completely cooked!!

I used to cut the raw breasts into daily portions and freeze individually wrapped in clingfilm, then thaw out one portion daily, cut it into 3 or 4 bits and microwave until cooked, then chop into smaller pieces.

Regarding fish - there are really very many opinions. The only one where everybody seems to agree on is that if you give salmon or tuna often, you should add taurine. Other opinions are so different - some say never give fish to a whole male because of mercury level and possibility of UTI, others say no problem, just do not give too much tuna, many say it's good to give fish to a cat... It's just so difficult to find the truth Cheesy .

I wouldn't deprive my cats from fish, and just recently I read that mercury level is usually not that bad, does not really affects cats and is actually high in only some kinds of tuna and low in something like catfish.

Also, my vet told me that the reasons of UTI are far from feeding them fish, it's ash and something else (I forgot) but it's not fish.

Another point, again I do not know how true it is, it's just "in my head", you know Cheesy . Back in Russia my vet told me NOT to try to cut meat into little pieces, not to grind it and to only make sure there is no bones - all the rest parts of meat is fine (I don't know the English word but hopefully you got the point). An adult cat has to be able to tear off rather big pieces of meat (they tear off their prey in wild, remember?), do not need just "good looking meat with no flaws" and this is a good and very healthy thing (to work on meat, not to just lick the ground one). Off course, we are not talking about little kittens. So I give my cats fairly large pieces (not very large off course), and they do not have any problem with eating it. I don't think it hurts anyway.
