Hi! I have 2 Himmies & 1 Persian. One of my Himmies, Beau, is almost 13 years old. He has been losing weight and want to ask advice of dry food to feed him. Currently, he is on Science Diet Sensitive Stomach which he tolerates great, and cruchy tarter control treats. I am open to suggestions. Our vet said he could use to pick up about 2 pounds. Please give me your input. Thanks!

With an older cat, there could be many reasons he's losing weight. I see you have been to your vet about this. Has the cat always been on the small side or is this weight problem new? Is this a new vet?

I'm a little perplexed why the vet would just state he needs more weight without trying to find out WHY he needs more weight, and make suggestions for higher calorie food based on the actual cat's needs.

I would hesitate on making suggestions to you because senior cats may have underlying issues. I would however, suggest another discussion with your vet or a new vet.

Hi, and thanks for your response. Yes, it was a different vet with the last visit. Beau will be 13 in April, his weight has ranged anywhere from 8 to 10 pounds during his lifetime, and he has had several teeth extracted over the years. We currently have him on Hill's Sensitive Stomach mixed w/Purina Natural(he is not tolerating the IAMS lately). He is a nibbler, and likes crunchy tartar control snacks along with cooked chicken or beef for an occasional treat. And whenever he (or any of our other pets) even tries to go anorexic on us, I give them Science Diet A/D to get their appetite back on track. In comparision to our other cats, Benny is just shy of 10# and Angel is 10 1/2# (Benny is a male 3 yr od Himmie and Angel is a female 5 1/2 yr old Persian) and Beau looks like a skinny runt up next to them at about 8 1/2#. I will definitely heed your advice, and inquire about this during his next vet visit with Beau's regular vet as he has had some borderline bloodwork several years ago. For now he is eating, sleeping, playing and purring as usual and I really appreciate your feedback, and admire you for your knowledge and expertise as a breeder Smiley I will let you know how his next visit w/the vet goes (will have him seen within the next week). Also, maybe you or someone else in the Forum could help me with posting pix of our furrbabies so everyone can 'meet' them. Thanks again Linda Cheesy

Hi Linda! I took Beau & Benny to the vet yesterday for a check up. Beau's weight was 9.3 pounds--his last weight at the end of Devember was 8.7 pounds--his weight last July was 9.3 pounds. My regular vet said he checked out just fine, that it could have been the scale on the last visit, and of course I chimed in that he and Benny were seen then for an ear infection and their appetites then had slacked off. He suggested some soft foods to supplement Beau's diet which would be easier on his mouth and teeth and provide additional calories. Beau will be due for his senior blood work up in July unless he runs into any problems before then. Benny's weight was up also to 10.7 pounds Cheesy And our newly adopted Persian has also picked up weight since January when we got her--her weight then was about 9.7 lbs and on her last visit on Feb 13th she weighed 10.6 lbs--she had not been vetted in believe it or not 5 years and needed a complete work up, needed treatment for both eye & ear infection and needed a dental, so I'm happy that they are all doing well. Thanks so much for your input, Linda, and I just wanted to let you know how they were doing

AWWW well very good, thanks for the update, I'm glad to hear he is doing well. Weight loss in a kitty always concerns me but, sounds like he's doing just fine and you are doing a great job with them!!
