I have had a ton of people say that it is time for me to find a new vet and I tend to agree, but there is not a lot to choose from here. There is another vet near by but she mainly works with horses. Not that that is a problem but I want someone who really knows something about cats and even Persians.
There are other vets but they are quite a distance from me. I like my vet for the simple reason that they are on call 24/7. I know that if I pick up the phone someone is available to help me with an issue. We only have one vehicle and so the only time I can get to a vet is on my husbands day off and that changes week to week. I could take him to work but it is a pain in the butt to do. He works an hour away and I watch kids during the day. It's all a big mess!
I hate to settle for whatever I can get but at this time I feel like that is what I am doing and it may kill one of my kitties in the long run, ie. Autumn. I wish I could find a vet that specializes in cats, but how do I do that? I know that they are out there but I have no idea how to find one or if there is even one near me. I just don't know what to do. I just don't want some back woods vet that is clueless about cats and would have to send me to a specialist anyway. Maybe I am asking too much.
Advice please!!!!

Probably I will not be very helpful here but I'll give you the advice, and off course it's up to you to follow it or not.

I'd advice you start educating yourself on the vet science yourself and count mainly on yourself and not on "what vet says". Off course, you may still need vets for tests or surgeries but at least it can save you lots of money and time maybe your kitty's health or even life.

There are books, net, forums etc. Most breeders do not go to vets often and they are quite able to treat their cats by themselves and from my experience they usually know better than common vets.

I had a good friend-cats/dogs breeder in Russia. She had high school education and she did C-sections herself and she did it perfect! Even some of her friends brought her their cats for C-section, just because they trusted her more than vets.

It's possible to get some prescription drugs on-line, I'd advice you get at least some of them like Clavamox.

Once again, it's just advice and it's up to you to ignore it or not but I'd advice you to go on raw diet forums like catster or catforum, read about raw diet, maybe ask questions and decide for yourself whether you want to rawfeed your cats or not. My opinion is that rawfed cats are much healthier and stronger than non-rawfed ones and have much stronger immune system. It's JMO only.

Good luck to you!

It is very hard to find vets really "up" on persians, or even that understand the unique needs of a cattery - which are different than pet homes.( do not mean this in a bad way but, with whole cats and breeding cats there are unique situations)

I have found the best thing is to keep YOURSELF informed. Before I even go to a vet I usually run a problem past seasoned breeders for suggestions and advice. There are health forums for breeders that can give you a lot of info.

What I look for in a vet is someone willing to listen to me, having updated equipment and knowing how to use it, and not with an attitude that all whole animals should be fixed (I know that sounds strange but, they are out there - everything is cured with a spay attitude).

The problem that I face is that my vet thinks that breeders are crazy and have crazy ideas. The vet thinks that because they are the "vet" they know most and best. We are "just breeders". They also tell me not to listen to other breeders. I have tried to bring in information that I have gotten off the internet, from other breeders, and experience and they look at me like I am way below them. I hate their snotty attitude. My point is I am paying for them to do a job and I expect them to do it, ie remove dead babies out of Autumn.

www.veterinarypartner.com

Use the link for cats and the search box in the upper left corner.

I use this two ways.  First, if my vet diagnoses something I'm unfamiliar with I can look it up and find tecnical info worded in a manner I can understand.  Second, if I'm concerned the issue could be A, B or C (whether by my own deduction or at the suggestion of somebody who has already been through a similar situation) I can walk in with the info in hand and ask my vet to rule it out.  It makes a stronger impression than "a friend said to ask you if".

Bottom line is that you need a vet you click with, one who readily accepts that you are going to be an active partner in the care of your kitties.  A vet can be the highest authority on paper, but if they can't or won't parnter with me, I have very little use for them.  There are very few black and white situations in vet medicine and for somebody to operate in the "it's my way or the high way" fashion would make me very uncomfortable.

Ask around in your community.  People talk and you can at least get a "vibe" for a vet that will tell you if you want to check him/her out a bit more.  Also, try calling your ER clinic and explain (without naming names) that you are looking for a great kitty vet because you have these special concerns.  The vet techs won't bash anybody, but if there's somebody awesome out there, they may drop a name.  ER's usually take referrals from all the community vets so hopefully there's no reason for them to play favorites and you'll get an honest opinion.

I know you know this but I have to say it anyway...ultimately it's your responsibility to thoroughly check out the vet/clinic and make the final decision.

I really feel bad for you.  There is nothing worse than having a vet you just don't click with and finding yourself second guessing in an already stressful situation.

After what you went through with Autumn, I can understand why you feel frustrated.  I understand that your choices are limited, so I'm not sure if you are able to do what I did to find a better vet for Phoenix. After researching some vets on the internet on some sites with free reviews,  I put up a post on Craigslist in cities nearby asking for recs for a good vet for cats. I mentioned that my kitty had a bad experience with a vet (and didn't name the bad vet), and then I asked if anyone uses 3-4 vets that are near me.  The great thing is that it's anonymous and I got back over twenty emails from cat lovers who either loved their vet or wanted to warn me for or against one of the vets I asked about...I ended up with a wonderful vet that I didn't even ask about in my area because 5 separate emails recommended them.

You can do a search for Vets in your area in many different ways on the net. If you are interested in a holistic vet you can go to AHVMA and locate ones in the area. Another thing that I do is I research A LOT about symptoms, diseases, medication and so forth. That way I have information and can make better choices. I never give the girls something that I haven't totally researched, the good and bad. I am lucky as my Vet has no ego and I can say NO to her. Sometimes I have told her stuff she didn't know. Not all Vets are okay with that, but I feel it is my responsibilty to know and speak up. Good luck , it is hard to know who to trust with their health and lives.

I am so lucky to have a wonderful vet who specializes in Cats Only. She is also very active in CFA as an exhibitor, master clerk and breeder of Devon Rex's. I travel almost 30 miles into town to see her, but it is so worth it. If I have an emergency, I am also a client at a VCA Animal Hospital that is located at the end of my street. I have gone to this clinic when time is of the essence and they will call my regular vet if additional info on the cat is needed. I live near a very large city (Houston), so there are many options that may not be available to people living in rural areas. I would suggest networking with other breeders in your area and asking them if they can refer you to a good vet. If you don't know any breeders close by, get online and look for them or talk to exhibitors at one of your local shows. The yahoo group Fanciers health List has a list of breeder friendly vets in their files section, but you could also post the question there too if you are a member. It is hard to find a good, breeder friendly vet when breeders get so much bad press...it is more important to have a vet who is willing to listen to you and any possible research you may have already done than anything, I think. Many times breeders know more about their cats and the illnesses that affect them than vets. That's not unsual at all.

Yesterday I got online and started searching for such a vet. I found one about an hour from me that just deals with cats. I think I am going to go to them for Autumn's issues and anything else that I think needs more attention. I like the idea of having a vet close by that is on call but I also want a vet that listens to me as a breeder and this one isn't cutting it. My husband has off a few days next week so I am going to set up an appointment for Autumn.
Thank you all for your advice and help! Cheesy

When you see the vet, ask her if she has any other clients who are breeders....

Tracy,
LOL!!!! You are too funny! Cool

No, I wish! I only have Blossom due on Monday. She is HUGE!!!! I have her queening cage ready (I posted a picture of it on the CATS section under cat houses) and on Sunday we are getting a bath, trim, and in our cage we go. I don't want to stress her out by doing it now. I am keeping a female back from her litter. She was bred by my old male so it would be an outcross.  Cheesy

Keep me posted on Vanilla Sky!!!!! I hope she does well and produces beautiful babies for you. You must be very excited that things are going better then last time.

I'm once again so sorry for all that Autumn has gone through and it's deffinately wonderful that your exploring your options and checking out other vets.

I always wondered if there was a vetranary association of some sort that you could look through to find vets that way but my goodness people here have great ideat to find vets.

Thank you for posting these questions as once again i've learned alot!

My vet doesn't get many persians but they are also on call 24/7 thank god! The male vet doc Kline i'm not real fond of but Devon the femal is maybe in her late 30's and is very nice and would probably do the research if needed and if I asked her too and she seems very open to suggestions. I really like her so far. And their prices are about the best around. So that's just a bonus and first is the quality of their care.

I wish you all the best and I thank everybody for their responces as that helps everybody learn as well!

Take care Michelle and Autumn!
