I think Phoenix choked on a hairball. I heard a horrid, LOUD, gaspy, wheezy sound in the kitchen-- it sounded just like my tea kettle. My heart dropped when I ran in the kitchen and saw it was Phoenix making the terrible noises, and her little chest retracting.  When I reached her, she'd stopped making the sound and was licking her lips. I did the finger sweep and did not feel or see any foreign object.  I gave her an inch of Petromalt and am just watching her.

She's my first cat, so I don't have anything to compare the episode to -- does this sound like she choked on a hairball and eventually swallowed it? She's never vomitted a hairball to my knowledge. But I give her a half inch of Petromalt a week as a preventative. I've never seen her put anything in her mouth except kibble, water, and hair (grooming). I was so very scared and want to make sure I'm on the right track.   I'm also going to learn kitty CPR ASAP.

Is her breathing normal now?

If her breathing is normal, gums nice and pink (not pale or bluish), she is acting normal, eating, drinking, etc, just watch her tonight and maybe call your vet in the morning and bounce it off them.  It might have been a hairball but if it continues, I'd have it checked out to be sure it's not something else.

If she's still making the noise and/or having a hard time breathing, call the ER now.

I don't know where you are so I don't know if your Vet is closed or open. If she is acting normal otherwise keep an eye on her. Could she have gotten ahold of something and choked on it, then swallowed it? You may keep an eye also on whether or not she has any stools. I agree if she shows any signs of problems a trip to the ER is in order. Keep us posted.

I just heard back from her vet. He said to to continue watching her and to take her to our animal hospital if it happens again.  I've printed out directions and have the carrier ready by the door. Thankfully, it has not happened again, she is breathing normally, and her gums are pink. Dianne, I can't think of anything she might have gotten hold of. I vacuumed earlier this evening, so I'm sure there wasn't any small pieces on the floor. :?

I did not think about the stools. That's a good idea. She had a normal bowel movement yesterday and usually stools overnight, so I will monitor the litter box.  I'll be less worried about any kind of small bowel obstruction when I see normal poo.  She's been sipping at the water fountain and ate two pieces of kibble (royal canin 30)...

She's parked herself in her mouse hunting spot under the kitchen table, and I'm just sitting next to her under the table and rubbing her back.  No purrs yet, but maybe that's cause she's focused on the mouse. Thank you both for the advice and good thoughts. I'll keep you posted.

Glad to hear she's okay and that you have your back up plan ready to roll!

Hey...What are you doing stroking her when she's trying to mouse?  Didn't you mess that up once already?  LOL  She must be thinking, "Geez woman, will you go look for butterflies and mouse muffins and leave me alone.  I'm workin' here!"

Scared me too  Shocked

I'm glad Phoenix is ok now. I know how scary those hairball sessions could be.  They sound awful. Please give your pretty girl a hug from her Aunty Karen

I'm sorry to scary you all. I should've made choking past tense Sad  Since I'm a nervous nelly, we swung by our wonderful new vet on Saturday. She thinks Phoenix choked on a hairball and eventually passed it.  I'm supposed to give her a bit of petromalt (available at petco) every other day until she blows her winter coat.  Vaseline will also work. One tip I got to get a kitty to eat petromalt is to put a slightly-larger-than-pea sized ball onto my finger and to quickly dab it onto the side of phoenix's mouth and she'll automatically lick and ingest....  My little girl can now hunt in peace without her mum hounding her Smiley  Thanks again for your advice and kind concern!
