I rescued a male "shaded" solid cream colored Persian today from a shelter.  "Moca" has been neglected and his coat is horribly matted.  How is the best way to get the mats out of his coat without causing him undo pain.  Can any one help ?

I would shave him down and start over.

Welcome, David and bless you for taking Moca to be your owner  Cheesy    I agree with Linda -- the kindest and least painful thing to do is clip him all the way down and start from the beginning.    Your shelter may be able to recommend a groomer to help you.

And we are very glad to have you join us!   :flower:

Welcome!! It's great to have you. I can't wait to see pictures and hear more about Moca.

I agree with the other posters. Your vet's office may also be able to shave him down. I had to do this with my rescue Phoenix.  They can leave 1 inch or so of fur, so Moca isn't "naked"   It's a nice way to bond with your kitty if you can pet and comb them without the pain of dematting.  When you start grooming Moca yourself, I'd highly recommend using a comb rather than a brush, which won't get down to the undercoat (where the mats start).  An excellent comb that many Persian owners use is called a "Greyhound" comb, which is metal. You don't have to get a costly one, as anyone that looks like that will work. I got a "no-name" brand one online for $8.  Here's what they look like:

Welcome to the site! I think shaving might be your best bet, and then you'll get a fresh start. Hope you're able to post pics soon -- can't wait to see Moca!!  Cheesy  Cheesy

Thanks Everyone !

I'll ask the vet today when I pick up Moca for a groomer that will be able to clip Moca short.  I want to be a gentle, and caring for Moca as I can, and I agree that it would be very stressful and upsetting for Moca to go through the ordeal of de-matting.  He's going to have enough adjustment to make.  At least he's in a home that will care for him.  He was neglected, and found outside.  The Shelter named him Moca because of his coat color.  He has the most captivating golden eyes.  He's having surgery today to be nutered.  I've got his bed, toys, and everything ready for his homecoming.  I'll post a pic (if I can figure this site out) when he's looking good.

Well it sounds like you are most certainly smitten!  And it sounds as if Moca is going to be spoiled rotten!  Good for you...Good for him!  Congrats on your new boy.  I can't wait to see his little face!

Welcome and what a lucky cat to have found a great new owner.
I am so glad you are trying to make the dematting less traumatic for Mocha! I can't wait to see her either. :cat:

Hi and welcome to the site. A suggestion, if I'm not too late. Mabey your vet could shave him while he is under anethesia for surgery. That may be less stressful to him. Thank you for giving him a good home.
