Chaka the Tibetan mastiff has finally been rescued after spending much of last week wandering the thinning ice of the St. John River since running away from her new home in Oromocto, N.B.

Animal control officer Angie Phillips captured Chaka Tuesday off Riverside Drive in Fredericton with the help of a live animal trap and a home-cooked ham.

"Probably about 15 or 20 minutes after we left the trap down there, with the ham in it, the dog went in to get the ham and it closed behind it. [We] were able to walk down onto the shore and retrieve the dog crate with the dog in it, and proceeded to take it to one of the veterinary clinics," Phillips said.

The 14-month-old dog had spent days avoiding would-be rescuers along the river from Fredericton to Oromocto.

Chaka refused rescue attempts on Friday. She had been walking the St. John River for four days. (CBC)On Monday, the Fredericton Fire Department had given up trying to rescue the dog.

"The dog has run out of ice in our area, and was moving downriver on Sunday," said fire department spokesman Bob Martin.

"[She] went down well past Jesse's Landing, and way down. Then we got another report it had moved back up. But it has to move down now if it's going to stay on the ice. We just don't have the ice any more," he said.

Chaka is now being checked over by a veterinarian.

The Quebec breeder will be taking the dog back, and will give her owner in Oromocto a new puppy in her place.

The owner purchased the dog two days before it ran off.

WOW!!!  That poor dog has had one heck of an ordeal.  They say that dogs and even cats will travel for miles to try and come back to their home (even if with the same family but the family moves to a new home).  What a story!

Bless Chaka (love the name) and her family as I am sure she worried everyone just sick!

Animals are amazing , how they can last and avoid us when they are afraid.. that is great news, Joan, I love to hear a story that ends well..

I was so releived when I heard the dog was rescued this morning!
They had shown her on the news on TV, and the poor thing was out there on the ice barking and barking.

The breeders had even came down from Quebec and stood on the shore calling and calling, but to no avail.  They even brought a dog down at one point to see if that would entice Chaka to come to shore.
She just kept running further away anytime someone made an attempt to get closer.

I'm so glad this ended so well, it was getting so depressing hearing about her daily on the news..thinking how could she go on day after day with no food, out there in the snow and rain and cold...

What's the deal with her owners? Did they try to help her?
She ran away after 2 days & the breeder is giving them a new dog???

Poor girl it is a miracle she made it & I'm thinking she will be better off back with her breeder.

Becki -- I had the same reaction as you at first -- but there are circumstances we just do not know.  It is possible the dog wanted to go back to the breeders and was just trying to find her way and really no fault of the new owners.  It is hard to say.  But I want to believe the breeder knows what they are doing and giving them a puppy might be it.

At least Chaka is safe!

I have to say..the new owners were distraught, and were down by the river to try and get her to shore..
But they were new to her, strangers actually..and also speaking English whereas the dog probably only understood French...
And at 14 months, Chalka was probably only wanting to get back to her original home..which was in another province (think State)

I'm sure they were Joan!  I know I would be a mess.  My own experience with Skye, my husky, says that they can get away from you in the blink of an eye.  And a Tibetan is a very large dog!  One of my coworkers here has a male she is showing.  And they have a tendency to bolt much like my Husky.  Maybe the new owners were also new to the breed and didn't realize how quick and powerful they are.  Skye has been with me since she was a tiny puppy but that doesn't change her escaping without warning right in front of my eyes.  We tend to have better control now and try to prevent such escapes but I am ALWAYS on my toes now that I know what she is capable of.

Chaka was in strange territory with new owners for just 2 days -- I'm sure she was confused and unsure of so much that she got into more trouble than she bargained for by taking off...I commend the breeders for making such a trip to help the dog!  And I'm sure seeing Chaka go home with them was hard for the new owners as well but it seems it was what Chaka wanted.  All in all it was a happy ending.

Wow, what a story, Joan! I'm so glad there was a happy ending! What a relief all round that she was rescued. :flower:

Can imagine how heart-wrenching it must have been for the breeder, the new owners.... and all the people following the story on the news.

Doesnt sound like anyone was to blame at all here.
Poor Chaka was likely just upset and confused, as you say...decided to strike out on this dangerous odyssey to find her way back to her "security" - her home.

Also consider the breed itself...

I believe Tibetan Mastiffs were used by nomadic tribe.  They were given their freedom at night to patrol and protect the camp.  They were entrusted to figure things out without a human at their side directing them 24/7.  So, some of that independence might be hardwired.  Not to mention, if she felt protective of her old home and people, I could see why she would go out searching and be reluctant to come in.  Poor baby was probably confused.

If I've got the right breed, I think these dogs are still so primal that the females only come into estrus once a year.

I'm glad the story had a happy ending!

I am glad she was rescued and is now safe, who knows what was in her mind. The breeder must be okay and care a great deal to come and try to help. Dillon was 15 months when we got him and although he was used to living with different people for periods at a time he always went home to the breeder during or after shows. When we brought him home from his final show you could tell he was confused. It was like okay this is a nice place but when am I going home. Sad

Joan,

I am so glad they could capture her and bring her back to safety. Being out there in the weather conditions you recently showed us must be no fun at all.... I amglad she survived and wish her a good life ahead!

Oh poor Chaka... I am glad that she is safe.  My question would also be how did she get away.  A dog that is new to you and you have no knowledge of should not be unattended and off leash.

This breeder gets a lot of admiration from me.  Responsible, kind and caring... way to step up and be responsible for what you produce.

I don't know if I would give these people another puppy... but, I respect their decision.

I would like to salute all of those who went to such efforts to rescue this baby...   big baby but at 14 mos, still a baby!!!!!

I just rescued an "animal print" mouse from Elvis and he is attacking me...

I'm glad she has been rescued and is returning to her original owner who she obviously is very attached to and needs to be with.
