I am wondering if any of you other black cat owners have any tips for getting good photographs of them.
I got a new digital camera for my birthday, but I just seem to figure out which setting to use to get the best shot of Hellcat.
It seems that everytime I use the flash his fur reflects the light and he looks like a little furry ghost. But when I try without the flash you can barely make out his face because he is so dark.
Any suggestions?
I am missing a lot of great photo opportunities over here!

ugh I wish I did know. Smokey is so hard to photograph mostly because she won't hold still.

I think if I asked my husband he'd say lots and lots of flash.

Never use the flash to photograph any cat if you want to get a good picture. Instead, think about taking your black cat out in the natural light for the best picture, or if you think he would bolt and run away, take a picture in a brightly lit room with the light coming in through the windows. I have a professional spot light that photographers use. It was about $100. That is another option if you are serious about getting really nice pics.

I usually have to see if it's bright enough otherwise I get an ink blot with gold eyes. It's not easy. I managed to get a decent one of Midnight the other day napping next to Brandy. I think what helped a bit was that it was still sunny out and shining in the room and Brandy is light enough to show a contrast against Midnight.

Yes sunshine is a great light for Smokey. I have a lot of trouble getting in door shots, I probably do need a spot light for her.

Blacks are difficult to get pics of. But as Tracy mentioned, natural sun light (with no flash), you can get some really nice pics!
I have a 7wk old lil girl I need to get some pics of, but So Cali has been gloomy lately, so no good pics right now (hope soon!)

There's a reason why you don't see many black cats in movies or on TV commercails because they show up as black blobs on camera.

Okay sort of off topic but, what is a diluted doll faced persian? Noticed that on your signature and was wondering what it means.

Well, I've also noticed that too much flash, and flourescent lights can make our babies look rusty, or whitish areas, etc.
I just got a new 7.1 Megapixel Sony camera, so I'm hoping purrhaps better quality will help?
Natural lighting will always do best, and I personally love the blacks and callies best!
Purrs & Hugs,
Julie

I find the best way to photograph black cats is in a bright room with a light background. I snapped this with no flash and I think this is one of the better photos of Spike, you can really see his features. Okay sort of off topic but, what is a diluted doll faced persian? Linda Late reply........ I call Spike a diluted doll face because I don't think he's a "pure" doll face I think there's something else in there. Even though some of the pictures I've seen lately of black doll face persian look just like Spike.
