I am mourning my little 8 month old Himalayan Mocha who I had to have put to sleep on Tuesday.  He had not eaten for a week, had persistant fever and some paralysis at times and had been on IV's. They never determined FIP for sure...the facts were not all there as everything was normal as far as blood counts, organ functions, ect.  Looking back, the little guy was always a little weak and small.  It hurts so badly and his little adopted "sister", 6 months old, is missing him as much as I am.  To make matters worse, I can't get a new buddy for her because we don't know if it was or wasn't FIP...and I have to pray for her health as well as my 14 year old persian.  Not a happy Christmas.  My heart is broken.  He was an angel...most lovable  kitten ever.

Oh, Susan, I am so sorry.  They find a lasting place in our hearts so quickly, don't they?    Be happy at the Bridge, sweet little Mocha!

Oh Susan, i am so deeply sorry for your loss

Poor little Mocha sounds like he was struggling through life but now he is happy and carefree playing with the butterflies at the rainbow bridge. He will always watch over you and his sister as a little angel on your shoulder.

RIP sweet sweet Mocha :flower:

Susan,

what a sad fate for poor Mocha, I can fully understand why your heart breaks for him, please accept my condolences.

Maybe in a while you can think of a new furbaby for your resident cat, is there a way to test if the FIP if that is what it was, has infected the others?

I send you all my good wishes and hugs and I hope that Christmas will not be too much of a sad time for you.

First of all, please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your beloved Mocha.  I'm so very sorry for your loss.  Just to let you know there is currently no reliable way to test living cats for FIP... this disease can only be confirmed after death via a necropsy.  It is thought that FIP can not be transmitted from an FIP infected cat to a healthy cat.  FIP is actually caused by a mutation of the corona virus in susceptible cats... those with insufficient or compromised immune systems.  Most kitties living in multi-cat households and catteries have already been exposed to the usually harmless corona virus... most will never develop FIP.  Again, this virus only mutates into FIP in susceptible kittens/cats.  With all that said, I highly doubt Mocha's "sister" will develop FIP as long as she is a strong, healthy kitty.  Just to be on the safe side, you might want to bleach your litter boxes, especially if Mocha and his sister shared them.  The corona virus is thought to be transmitted via contact with feces.

My heart goes out to you, and your little Mocha.  He's playing with so many of our kitty angels up at the bridge now, where he'll be healthy and strong, waiting for the day he gets to see you and his sister someday in the far future.

Purrs & hugs,

Julie
