One of mine had it done via laser. Well worth the money. Heal time is like nothing and your kitty will feel so much better being able to freely breathe he won't care if his nose stings for a couple days.
Mine was a year old as well.
If I were you I would check with the Vet clinic at Tufts University near Boston. It is one of the top Vet schools in the country and probably could point you to a qualified surgeon (or even do it there). That is where all the breeders that I know go if there is a problem more involved than their local vet can handle.
thanks for the advice! he just turned a year old in late September, we were hoping he would grow out of it but it looks like we are going to have to do something about it. if anyone knows a good surgeon near Connecticut or anywhere in New England please let me know!
That's a relief that Muffins is perking up again. You are so good to follow through with her meds and it seems to be paying off. Good luck at the vet's on Monday.
So good to read this news! Wishing Mz Muffins the best! Maria and Alaska
Just an update: we are doing much better! For the last 2 days she has woke up with both eyes open and she has gone back to her normal silly personality. Still doing eyedrops several times a day and antibiotics...no more benadryl. We have our follow up with the vet Monday which she won't be happy about but we will open her Christmas presents that day so hopefully that cheers her up!
Both of mine had it done, one twice It made a huge difference in thier health and quality of life.
As Kira said make sure the vet has plenty of experience, and success.
Good luck
First of all, that is one gorgeous baby
My blue boy, Chunk had it done. It helped him but he is still prone to allergies, so he still gets snorty. A few pieces of advice...
- Make sure you get a surgeon who has experience putting brachycephalic pets under anesthesia.
- Make sure you find a surgeon that uses a laser. It will heal more quickly, be less painful, and not require suture removal.
- Watch their eating for a few days afterwards. Chunk could smell his food for the first time, so he inhaled it (literally) and wound up with an infection.
Good luck!
Our himalayan had this. We went to a vet in Rhode Island who specialized in eye care. With drops and ointments, we were able to get rid of it. However, there is scarring which will probably never go away. Her eyes are very cloudy from the scars, but the worst of it is gone. She is 15 years old we are just happy that she is healthy and active! Good luck!
Has anyone done this surgery on their persian? We have had 5 persians and this is the first one that has nasal problems. His face isn't flatter than the others we've had or have now, but his nostrils are so small there is barely a hole at all! He sneezes constantly and is always snorting and sniffling.
We are considering stenotic nares surgery. Anyone done this? Success?
Any recommendations of surgeons in New England?
The benadryl was not to treat the ulcer...it was to treat the swelling and the sneezing and also it helped her sleep. I am allowed to give her a small dose of childrens benadryl at home also. She has been sleeping pretty good today so I am not sure that I will.
I sure hope it is healing well and completely. It is a reminder to me not to get too confident, it can happen at any time, no matter now long it has been.
Sparky has the same problem with the herpes.
Hugs to both of you
So glad you are able to help Muffins with her eye ulcers. They sure aren't any easy thing to treat at home, Tess hates the eye drops and it takes 2 of us to hold her and she still squirms.
Jen I'm interested to read about the benadryl shot the vet gave her, can you expand a bit about this as I've never heard of it being used before and what effect does it have for this type of treatment?
I've being using some of those cat Lysine treats you spoke about earlier and it's great having something they like.
Sending healing thoughts and purrs to Muffins
God bless Muffins and her momma
She woke up with the right eye shut again from the * but I expected that. I believe she slept a lot better though so it's a step in the right direction. We are sitting in the bathroom right now. Have to wait 5 minutes in between eye drops.
Sending healing thoughts to sweet Muffins, sounds as if you've caught it nice and early

Would that be you or Muffins?
Kiss her a kiss from me, please.

Poor Muffins. I'm glad the Benedril is helping and hope she gets better about the eye drops.
