What is Polycystic Kidney Disease?
Polycystic Kidney Disease or PKD is a genetic problem that is carried in lines of Persians (including Himalayans). It can be passed on to the kittens even if only 1 parent carries the gene. PKD is known to kill at 2-6 years of age by filling the kidneys with cysts, thus destroying the healthy kidney function.
PKD in the Breeding Community
PKD is creating a great deal of controversy among Persian breeders. The jury is still out as to the seriousness of this problem. In some cats it appears quite severe, but many others live normal healthy lives. Most responsible breeders will not breed two PKD-positive cats together. Some believe that no PKD-positive cats should be used in any breeding program.
