Persian Cats: Grooming Techniques Part 1

Cotton Swabs and Towels

Some type of grooming is essential for the Persian cat. Obviously, a show cat will need more grooming than a pet. If you love the look of a show cat, but do not show, you can still groom to that perfect show look. This is a series of articles that will cover every aspect of typical grooming sessions for a Persian cat, both for show and pet cats.

It is a good idea to have all your grooming supplies in place before you get your Persian kitten. What you will need:

Grooming Your Show Cat

Get Ready to Groom

There are as many techniques to grooming for a show, as there are breeders. Much depends on the age of the cat, the sex, time of year, color, and coat texture. Sometimes, daily brushing can cause more damage to a show coat than good. Check the coat several times daily, just by petting the cat, and if you feel the start of a small snarl, then comb it out using a wide-tooth metal comb. Never use a slicker brush for any type of daily, deep combing.

Ear Mites in Cats

Ear Light

Cats, more than of the other common house-pets, are susceptible to ear mites. Fortunately, when caught early, an ear mite infestation can easily be treated. Knowing the early warning signs makes the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major irritation. If your cat experiences these warning signs, you should see a veterinarian as soon as possible:

* Itching
* Scratching the ears and/or head
* Head shaking, as if trying to shake the mites out
* Scabs and/or hair loss on the head or around ears

Persian Cat: Chocolate & Lilac Color

Chocolate & Lilac

Chocolate or lilac Persians? Can it be possible? I, as an owner, breeding Persians and Exotics, pose myself such a problem quite recently. Of course they exist, if to see from genetic point of view. These colors are included into standard, there is their description, but where are they? By all accounts from abroad, they have such animals but for some reason they are more often met in pedigrees of British cats as experimental partners for leading new color into the breed, but not like exhibition stars.

The Wildly Popular Himalayan

Himalayan Cats

Loved the world over, the ever so popular Himalayan cat achieves its beauty from both the Siamese from whom it gets its colored points, and to the Persian, which it most closely resembles. The Himalayan is one of those strictly human engineered breeds that took over ten years to develop by British breeder Brian Sterling-Webb, finally earning breed registration status in 1955. In England, the Himalayan is actually known as the Colourpoint Longhair.
