So my cat Smegul has gross yellow stains on his arms and chest from eating canned food and cleaning his gross face in his past home... I read somewhere online about a bleaching paste you can apply to this to help whiten their fur, and I was just wondering if anyone had done this personally or had a suggestion? I use Eye Envy for his face. His face stays super clean now, but the rest of him just doesn't get better. Baths have not helped.

I have a white Persian and I have always used PearlWhyte shampoo on her to keep her from being yellow. I also use it on my bicolors (two blue and whites and a black and white) to brighten their white parts, too. Petsmart sells a version of a whitening shampoo that is pretty good, too. I also use either Groomer's Goop or Dawn dishsoap as a first shampoo on my white Persian to get the grease out of her coat. Then I follow with the whitening shampoo.

"Bleaching" is a bad idea because it makes the hair more porous which in turn allows it to stain more easily and deeply.

You could try bathing twice a week and experimenting with different foods...

Also, "hard" water often discolors fur, perhaps that is part of the problem

Thank you ladies! More on the topic-

He stays very grease-free due to being on a dry kibble and brushing daily. Although it's been a month since his last bath and he's starting to get a little greasy behind the ears. The staining he has has been there since I got him and hasn't gotten better. His legs are brown and his chest is yellow... Id hate to waste Eye Envy on his body if something like peroxide and baking soda would do the trick.. *shrug* is there anything besides a shampoo you suggest?

Sounds like you are just going to have to let it grow out - trim the coat, carefully, if it bothers you to look at it. Keep his eyes scrupulously clean or the stain will just get worse. Don't bleach - it will just make the coat more prone to stain as the other poster said, plus if you don't know what you are doing you could cause more problems or potentially harm him. Let's just say I am not a dry food only diet fan and let it go at that. You could try a water bottle for drinking or a water bowl made for Persians - they can get their tongue on to drink but not their face. I believe it is called a bee hive bowl. Also a coffee filter bib when he eats may help.

I wouldn't use a bleaching agent on a pet. It causes the hair to be very porous afterward and stains can get even worse. I have a white kitten that I am preparing to show and I have learned several "tricks" from other exhibitors on how to keep these cats white. First, I would suggest using an enzyme shampoo. I use Crystal Light by BioGroom and have been amazed at the results. It literally eats the stain (especially organic stains), away. Follow the directions. You must heat it before applying. I use the original formula of Eye Envy that has to be refrigerated. It has an antibiotic in it. I also use the packing powder DAILY. Follow the directions. It takes a lot of work to keep a white cat WHITE. My cats are all trained to use a water bottle. If you can't do that, try making the homemade fountain that many people on this site use. I think there is a link to it somewhere here. I don't like those little bee hive bowls. They're expensive and my cats knock them over. You really need to bath a white cat every two weeks in order to keep them clean. I use GOOP auto mechanics hand cleaner to degrease and diluted Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid.
