Did you get him from a breeder or is he a rescue?

Dakota was a rescue and since he had issues, vomiting, ect, I wanted to get him tested but deep down I knew he had PKD. I don't know what to tell you but if you do test and find out, there are things you might be able to watch for. It's good to know so you can make sure you have a vet who knows more about this awful disease. :cat: :cat:

If you got him from a breeder, he should be PKD free - IF, this is a big IF; the breeder tests their cats for PKD. The breeder should say on their website whether or not they test their cats...

Thanks for liking Chunk, I have pics of him as a young kitty somewhere, I will see if I can scrounge them up ;)

I would ask the breeder for documentation that the parents have been tested and are negative first. If not then have him tested. It is easy to do yourself, no vet involved. PKD can not be cured, but some cats afflicted live long lives and pass from other causes I have been told. The 2 pets of mine that had it were the exception to that. Being educated about this disease goes a long way to keeping your cat comfortable if he has it.
Kira I would not trust what the website says - some say they are testing....how many and which have been tested? Are they still breeding the ones NOT tested? Is it DNA testing or scans? I want to see the report itself. Guess I am not a trusting person.

Weird how this came up since I was talking to Lynda last night about PKD.

If this was my kitten, I wouldn't test him. I have not tested any of my Persians. Here's why.

If the test came back that he had the gene for PKD, would you give him up? or have him destroyed? I wouldn't, others would or do.

If it came back positive, what does that mean? A positive result means he has the gene and has cysts, but PKD doesn't always kill cats at young ages. It depends on how fast the cysts grow. Some die as young kittens, but some PKD positive cats live well into their teens and die from other causes.

Is the information of any help? In my case, I already feed my cats the highest grade food and do everything I can to prevent CRF. The end problems of CRF and PKD are the same -- lack of kidney function. Having this information will only stress me out because I will wait for something to happen -- something that may not happen for years and years. I'd rather just enjoy my cats than constantly worry about them.

And before others jump on me, one reason that I was talking to Lynda about PKD is that Bertie, DLH, at 4 years old, is showing symptoms of CRF. Since he may have either Persian or British Shorthair in him, PKD is more probably than CRF at this age.

Haley, didn't you say in your "salmon oil" post that you've had your 4 month old kitten for 3 months?
For me, this would have been a huge red flag that your baby's breeder isn't taking any of the necessary precautions.
I'd go with LindaH and not do the test.
At this point he's your baby and I'd rather just enjoy having him.
He is adorable!

Test or no test, it's up to you. I agree with the others that you can't trust some breeders unless you know they have documentation, ect. If you don't want to test, and I know I didn't, just make sure, like Linda said, that you feed them well, ect and have a good vet keep an eye on him.
I never thought of giving Dakks up even when I found out his problems. They are worth it!
Your baby may be just fine .
