I am so happy things are going well for little Emily. I know that the rescue shelter I know best does occasionally have get nares surgery done on a cat. Their life improves immensely afterwards.

Emily is not doing well. There is still some swelling in one nostril and the scabbing is making it hard to breathe. We took her back to the vet and they said she has a viral infection which is causing the irritation and swelling. She won't eat. I have moistened the scabs, to no avail. I simply don't know what to do.

I'm sorry, this has to be so stressful. The scabs were gone by now for mine, I can't remember what we did to keep them soft. I would syringe feed her if she won't eat, does your breeder have any advice, she may have gone through this before. Is it your vet that you took her to, we're you able to speak to the vet that did the surgery ?

I hope she gets feeling better quickly.

Maybe a little Vaseline on a q-tip to moisten them???? Poor baby.

Sorry to read this. I wonder if nasal application of Bactroban would be Ok to use on this area? This is Mupirocin calicium ointment 2%.. it's made specifically for the nose/nares and innner application. I had to use it when I got shingles inside my left nostril (very very painful) and more recently when I had some bleeding inside my nose and scabbing. Perhaps Emily's Vet could prescribe this?

The other thing is the lack of appetite is most likely from both the viral infection and just maybe her sense of smell being impaired. I'd wonder about some highly aromatic food that might have some super stinky cat like appeal~ and or as mentioned here syringe feeding her if not eating anything and of course last recourse having her at the Vet's for parental feedings.

I know you're monitoring Emily closely re viral infection turning bacterial so hopefully she'll improve and in the meantime do inquire about the nasal bactroban. I don't know if it can be used for cats tho it was most helpful for my painful inner nares probs.

Sending healing thoughts to Emily and hope she'll soon be eating again. Maria, Winston, and Alaska

Oh no. Poor Princess Emily is in my prayers. It is so hard to see our babies in pain. Will you update us with what the vet says? She is in good hands with you.

The vet who did the surgery told us that it looks like she has a herpes virus flare up and gave us some medicine to give her that builds the immune system, nothing else.

I took her into to see my regular vet this morning and she said to give her lysine. So I have a tube of that and I'm supposed to give it by syringe. Not easy. The thing is, one nostril looks real good and the other one is completely closed due to swelling. We are afraid of scar tissue building up in that nostril. Heaven forbid! This morning, my vet also gave her an injection of long acting antibiotic.

She must be eating and drinking behind my back because she hasn't lost any weight and she isn't dehydrated. I'm going to give her some chicken baby food this afternoon. She loves that. They tried to give me some of this RC Recovery canned food at the vet. When I read what was in that stuff, I decided not to feed it....by products?...yuck!

Thanks so much, everyone. It feels so good not to be out here alone. I am taking her back tomorrow so my vet can check her before the weekend.

I have to wonder if a little application of bactroban (again nasal application) would be helpful for as you may or may not know shingles (which I had in my nares) is the herpes virus. I was advised to use Lysine as well for my eyes as I had a lesion right next to my left eye. Just wondering. Perhaps you could ask your Vet. The bactroban really helped with my inner nares symptoms and I don't know if Emily could be helped by this tho it doesn't hurt to ask. Again it's specifically a nasal application form of bactroban.

SOOOOOOOOOOOO happy to see this update. So happy. I give PPP and Chunk the powdered lysine every day and just mix it into their food, they can't even taste it. It does help Puffy quite a bit... I don't know the difference in Chunk because I've always given it to him.

HUGS HUGS HUGS to you and the babies
