I have my cat Smegul eating dry cat food (Costco brand) and I can't for the life of me figure out how to help him keep it in the bowl! When he eats, he crams his face flat into the food and always dumps 70% of it on the floor... I've tried a shallow bowl, a deep bowl, and even a bowl thats shallow in front and deep in the back! Is there a brand of food out there that's easier for them to pick up? The Costco food is shaped like pencil erasers and is really just not helping him at all. I spotted a Persian food by Royal Canin and am curious if their 'shape' is as awesome at helping them eat as the bag portrays. Suggestions about a feeding system or food?

Some are messier then others, the cats that is. Jasee gets his food all over! He eats raw and I always find chunks of raw chicken on the placemat and not on the dish. He also gets his dry food all over, his is shaped like little stars and he will break them apart and the crumbs go all over. I am cleaning it everyday. So sorry, have no advice. It may have something to do with their smushy faces, Jasee's a flat face so I attribute it to that.

Good Luck!

Hello!
Actually, Royal Canin makes a Persian cat food that is specially shaped for their faces so that they can pick it up more easily. A lot of people on the site don't love Royal Canin, but I use it for Puffy and she really enjoys it! Maybe a little too much sometimes! Puffy is still on the kitten food, so it isn't shaped the same; but the persian kibbles are shaped like ovals so they can pick they up.

I will warn you, it isn't cheap! But probably worth it in the long run! Good luck!

My boys are smushy-faced and are neat eaters. Tabitha, on the other hand, is a DSH tabby and she's a very messy eater!

I put a rubber tray under their food dishes to catch most of the scattered kibble. Mine are not smushy-faced, but at least one of them (Humphrey, but who's talking) is a messy eater. The kibble is in a shallow, Corelle dessert dish.

I have 2 who deliberately pull it out onto the floor before eating. Have you tried using a plate? That is what I use and to be truthful only the ones who eat off the floor make a mess. I am one of the ones on here who HATE Royal Canin. It was resonsible for me nearly losing my boy Spencer a few years ago. He blocked and was hospitalized for a week. The formula plays with the ph balance of the urine. Higher ph levels cause calcium oxalate crystals while lower ph causes stuvite crystals. I never use a Urinary formula of any kind or brand any more. This is only my opinion and there are a lot who would disagree with me, but having almost lost my big silver boy and having major vet bills convinced me it wasn't worth the risk. Do what is best in your situation since obvisously it doesn't affect all cats the same way - or they wouldn't still be in business!

I have messy and tidy eaters, two are the worst they dump it everywhere. Its a losing battle and I have given up and just pick them up all the time. I used to keep the food bowls in the kitchen but they all thought it was fun to play with the kibbles and chase them all over the kitchen.

:flower:The only food my babies have been eating since kitten is Royal Persian 30 and at the moment I even get
it flown in from South Africa.

And even with the special shape the trick is a raised bowl stand. :D

If the bowl is flat on the floor it is a endless struggle while the put their whole face in the bowl trying to scoop the
food out. If it is on a slightly higher level then it is easier.

Hope it helps! :flower:

We took to purchasing extra large steel bowls to allow for the `full face in the bowl` type of eating! Has worked well but he`s taken to pulling bits from his bowl and eating them outside

Hi there- we have a persian boy named Shiloh that is a messy eater. We tried to find a solution and finally with much trial and error I found something that worked for him. We purchased an elevated feeder stand with a metal bowl and switched his food to Nature's Logic dry. I find that he eats slower and takes his time. I think it also helps his breathing because he doesn't have to bend his neck and head so far to eat. The feeder measures 4" in high so it is the right height for him. I do know they make a shorter version.

I hope this suggestion helps.
