Hi everyone. I just joined and I hope to find lots of good info here. I've been searching hte web for the right answers to my questions only to find myself more confused then ever.
I've been a cat owner all my life and lost my two kitties last year. After some time I felt I was ready and I finaly bought my dream kitty. A white persian with just a touch of silver on the top of her head. I bought her from a crazy cat lady and she seemed well taken care of but I just don't know about that women. LOL. She had 11 cats and dogs! So here are my questions:
Her face was stained because the women was giving her forumla on top of her moms milk. She also has eye stains and shes having little eye yuckys build up in the cormers of her eyes. The woman told me to get this tear stain removal from walmart and do it every day. I have been. Actualy like 2-3 times a day but its still stained. I've only had her 2.5 days. Is it normal for her eyes to have discharge at all? Will this go away? And how should I wash her face every day? I've been using a q-tip with that stuff then going over it with a damp cloth. Maybe there is a better product out there? Also when would she need to be bathed?
If you can help answer my questions and help me get her face looking beatiful I would appreciate it alot!
Here we are on our way home. I'm sooooo in love with her and want to be a good mommy to her!

Congratulations on the new kitty! She's utterly adorable!!!
As for the eyes and stains, a lot of Persians do have eye staining and discharge in varying degree. The discharge should be clear or slightly brownish, but not yellow or greenish junk. (If yellow/green, then it's a possible eye infection and she should go to the vet.)Some have none, others need cleaning twice a day. The problem is the anatomy of the face and how functional the tear ducts are. If the tears overflow the eyes, they get into the fur and then a yeast infection will cause a brownish stain on the fur.
The best product seems to be Eye Envy. There's also Angel Eyes. Others in this group make their own stain cleaners and hopefully they will post the recipe again.
Now, about someone being "a crazy cat lady" just because she has 11 cats and dogs,... I'm in trouble.

Hi there, I also have just joined this website as I treated myself to my first Persian kitten two weeks ago , after many years of having a variety of strays over the years. Romeo looks very very similar to ur little one except he has a little more orange to his face. I am so in love with him, he is not like a cat he follows me EVERYWHERE, and doesnt leave my side ,so affectionate, I came on this website mainly to look for advice because like u my one worry is his eyes. They run , and so does his nose, he also sneezes quite a lot, but is eating well and full of energy. The lady that i bought him from seemed very good breeder, she told me that he was teething and that it could cause runny eyes, so i am wondering now is it just that or should i take him to the vets. I bathed him for the first time yesterday (with the shower ) and he loved it. Amazing as i thought cats hate water. It is a whole new learning curve for me, and so am hoping to get a lot of feeding/grooming tips on here. Did u get ur kitten in east london , she looks very similar to mine??...oh hang on just realised i think u r in America, so they are probably not related.!!!!!

Thank you for the welcome. I hope I didn't offend anyone by saying she was a crazy cat lady! lol. She also has a rescue center and was talking about saving racoons and even a moose. I just thought she was a bit odd.
My kittens drainage isn't yellow or green so that's a relief. Maybe it is teething? She also had vacines. I just hope they get better. I may try the eye envy but wonder if I really do need the poweder? I look forward to getting to know more of you here.

I'm not sure about the teething causing runny eyes, as I've only had one set of kittens. Some of the others would be better able to answer that. The vaccines may cause some of the running eyes as part of the body's immune response.
debsydo -- As for sneezing, it may be due to something in the air (dust, pollen, etc), the drainage from his eyes, or it may be a respiratory problem. If it gets worse and/or there's mucous, then he should definitely go to the vet immediately. Kittens can get into trouble quickly with respiratory problems. If he seems energetic, is eating, and there's no snot, then a vet visit isn't so critical, but since he's new to you, a vet visit is still a good idea sometime this week.
As for the "crazy cat lady", it's my goal in life. I just had always thought it would take more than 11 cats and dogs to reach that goal. (No offense taken.)

It is normal for Persians to have brown eye discharge. Whites are the hardest of all Persians to keep clean because they stain so easily, so you can expect to have to clean her eyes probably 2 x a day to keep them free of tears. I have a 10 wk old white kitten that I am currently getting into show condition and what I use on him is Eye Envy. It is the best product for reducing and lightening stains. You need to buy the original solution that contains an antibiotic in it (it needs to be refrigerated), and the lightening powder to apply after you have wiped the eyes. The powder is important because it lightens the stains that are already there and protects the fur from getting restained. You can use a cotton makeup remover pad (like Swissors) to wipe the eyes and a Q-Tip to apply the powder. Eye Envy sells a starter kit that you may want to get and full instructions are included, but don't expect the stains to go away overnight. It looks like your kitten has food or milk stains on her face. The only other way to get rid of these stains is the remove the stained fur. You can do that with grooming tool called a "stripping knife". They sell them in the Petsmart dog grooming section. This tool gently stripes off the top layer of fur and since fur on the face grows back the fastest, within a month or maybe two, your kitten will have new unstained hair. If you do this, I would still get the Eye Envy though, because you are going to need it. You can also ask your vet to prescribe you an antibiotic eye drop like tobramycin or gentamicin. Put the drops in her eyes 2 x day for 10 days and her tears will run clear for several weeks. Managing the tearing on a white cat is an ongoing process that you can expect to do every day for the rest of her life.

You will also need to bathe her. I bathe and degrease my pets once a month. Kittens can be degreased just like adults.

Thank you for all the info. I went looking for tear stain remover today and after looking I will be ordering the eye envy. I'm so excited to try it. As for the stripping knife... That sounds scarey for me to use! I'm nervouse enough at the thought of giving Dutchess her first bath as it is!

Hmmm Is there an exact number? Maybe not. I think we just have to love our cats like crazy and have many of them! I would have more then one but I just can't keep up with the litter and vet bills. At one time I had three cats and I also have three kids! (I look young!)
BTW how many cats do you have?

I have 9. It was an accident. Really, it was. Seriously, I never meant to have more than 4, but my vet gave me one or two who needed specialized diets or be put down, I rescued 2 Persians from starvation and euthanasia at shelters, and my husband totally failed at fostering one Persian. (Then there's hubby's 2 d-o-g's, but they're a whole other problem.) The saving graces are no kids, most are very healthy, and my vet, since she helped getting me into this mess, gives me a group discount!

She is adorable, good luck with the stains, yes many Persians do have tearing and whites are the worst, simply because you can see it.
