I have 3 beautiful persians who for the 1st time are being attacked by fleas. They are strickly indoor cats but they are getting the fleas from my little chihuahua who goes outside. I have used advantage 2 on them and the dog but they keep getting fleas. My one little girl Chloe Michelle has raw spots on her back. I gave her a bath yesterday with a flea shampoo then sprayed some oatmeal based skin calming product on her and dosed her with the flea medication. I have also treated the carpets in my house with a carpet powder just for fleas. But a month later they are all itching and twitching :cat: It is costing me almost a $100.00 a month just for the advantage not that my kitties are not worth it but gee thats alot of money and I was wondering how to keep the fleas off my cats. Thanks for any suggestions.

I hate carpet which I've had while apt. renting and know the flea prob well living by the beach and having a dog as well as two P's... what I've used on my carpet is Borax (the laundry detergent) because it's not harmful to the animals and I use Front Line Plus on the dog (still hard during flea season to keep her w/o) and use Revolution on the cats. I keep them shaved during the summer pretty much tho that's also because I don't have a/c and it gets terribly hot in here and keep the dog w/a terrier cut vs. her regular mini schnauzer cut.

I wonder if you could maybe board all pets and use a flea bomb in your place if they're really bad? I don't use it because I use the Borax but I do get a carpet spray for Fleas and use that if I can have all 3 pets out of the house at the same time for a few hours at least (like when I'm having them groomed). With the spray I have to make sure the carpet is dry before having the cats/dog walk on it...

I agree on the flea bomb. Once they are in the house you can treat the cats all you want and it won't help, you have to eliminate them from the entire house and a bomb is a good way to go. You can board or you can find a pet friendly hotel to take them to for a night so you can kill those nasty suckers in your home. They are the worst.

the flea bombs work well, the other thing you may have to do and not let the little doggie out, because he will keep bringing in the fleas. good luck Pat

I agree with the flea bomb. Very effective but of course you have to have the rooms cleared of all eatables and food plates before use.

For instant relief you can use capstar on them...I have had very good luck with it. starts working within 30 minutes and after 4 hours all fleas should be dead...works for 24 hours....you ccan give them one tablet per day if you need too. Use the borax also...it really helps...google it to find out how to do it.

I was just going to suggest the Capstar! You can give Capstar daily if necessary but do not use another flea med while they are on Capstar. So right now they have advantage on them...so wait about 2 weeks and then introduce the Capstar. The Capstar will only kill adult fleas not larva so you will need to go back to the advantage eventually. We rescued a dog a few years ago and my vet gave us a weeks worth of Capstar and then after that we used Frontline. Bathing in between.

FYI - if you've got gas stove with a pilot light, you CANNOT use a flea bomb!

When we moved into our previous townhouse, we had the worst flea infestation. I was pregnant and a flea bomb wasn't recommended, so we used a few things. We sprayed vinegar on the carpets a few times a day, and vacuumed three times a day (after each time we emptied the cannister). We also had the carpets and couches steamcleaned. All bedding and clothes were washed in hot water, the cats were bathed a few times a week and treated with Advantage. I steam mopped all the tiles and used a handheld steamer on all of the skirting boards.

We tracked our progress with flea traps (a shallow tray filled with water and a few drops of detergent, and placed under a lamp or in front of the tv at night), and slowly but surely we got rid of the nasty little buggers! I'm paranoid about fleas now, but we haven't had any problems since (we also moved to an area with a flea problem, my friend is constantly battling them).
