I know this has been a topic that comes up frequently however I have to ask because Winston is now having more gooey poops w/gas runny and really stinky. He seems unable to eat anything now that doesn't trigger that. Is Pumpkin that you use for pie filling Ok to give if he'll eat it? I'm sick to my stomach about Winston because he's so hard to feed anymore with stuff that he won't have probs w/ or at least stuff that I know about feeding him. If he just eats his kibble he does pretty well but he wants the raw food too. And he absolutely hates when I clean his bottom and loses his balance cuz he can't hold himself up and he won't let me do that while trying to clean him. Advice please...

No pumpkin pie filling. It will make him more ill. Can you get winter squash baby food? I can never find pumpkin, so that's what I use. Hugs to you and your little man. How is your back feeling? Have you tried a butt shave on him? This might help. Poor guy.

You'll notice it says 100% pure pumpkin on the can even though it has a picture of a pumpkin pie. Don't get the one that says "pumpkin pie filling".

TK eats pumpkin every day for breakfast however, she will not eat squash!

Don't get this one

I cannot remember Winston's medical history, but has he been treated for colitis? It sure sounds like colitis to me, but I don't want to pretend to be a diagnostician. Colitis is what Bogart has and it can be kept in control with a combination of medications. Bogart takes a mixture of metronidazole, sulfasalazine, and prednisone. They are compounded and put into a single capsule that he has been taking daily. Gradually, we have been able to reduce the level of medication. He now takes one-quarter the amount he started with. It took care of his poops and gas and the terrible stink right away. The only way, I have been told, to determine for sure if it is colitis (a lower intestinal problem) is via a colonoscopy along with blood and fecal tests. That is a pricey procedure. Perhaps you can cut to the chase and just give him the medicine since he is a senior cat. Even a raw diet did not cure him (at least so far), but Bogey is bigger and stronger and better able to fight whatever ails him with a diet containing more protein and less of the grain that also bothered him (and his brother).

I've never had much luck with pumpkin stopping runny poos. If you want to try, you can either used canned, or babyfood, or steam/puree any winter squash.

A better option might be slippery elm powder to help calm his intestines.

I know Winston is CRF and that does have a digestive component, but it usually involves vomiting. He might have developed an allergy to something in the food? Or colitis like Barbara suggested? or....?

Thank you all .. I've been just sick to my stomach as well re moving and not having the same Vet care for Winston. I'll talk to my Vet re possible colitis. Winston is impossible to pill and has gotten very bad about giving meds to as he gets so anxious and gurgles and spits everything all over the place. I am really having trouble seeing him struggle so to ambulate and then have the poops so bad even tho he wants to eat. I feel like my heart is breaking watching him.

Kira my back is better. It gets out of whack every once in awhile when I overdo which is often enough.

thanks so much for the photos of the cans of pumpkin depicting the diff. I'll go look for both the squash and the pumpkin (not pie filling). thanks again.

As a baker who loves loves loves to bake punkin pies year round, lemme tell ya, don't get the pie filling, the 100% pure makes the bestest pies. i add a little more ginger and just a tad less sugar than the recipe calls for.

Sorry about the digestive issues. have you tried the 24 hour fasting trick and the boiled chicken? or is it rice? I'm so glad we have experts here that can help you.

purrs and snuggs for your kitty! :paw:

Hugs, Maria. It could be the new cat food as well. Might take some time to adjust. SNUGS TO YOU. Take a deep breath and a bath... and have a glass of vodka. You need it. ;)

LindaH.. ok please tell me a bit more about the slippery elm.. I think I've seen a teabag form of this tho is it in capsule supplement OTC in health food store? And how do I mix it or give it like so much powder to so much water (if that's even appropriate). I have to make an appt. with the Vet re checking out colitis. Winston is very sensitive about having his rear end touched and what I've noticed when he pushes to have a bowel movement it's like he has a huge hemorrhoid coming out or a part of his rectum protruding. I have to tell the Vet tho I have forgotten to as I've really just been watching him recently and have to turn away almost between the visual and the odor.

Dan, thanks for the baking tip ;)

Kira, I have only been giving Alaska the tuna flavored food. Winston could never tolerate it... he's having the same prob he was having when I had to take him off of wet gravey that was all he would eat of the wet food.

My poor widdle man ~ he just doesn't seem happy right now. I wish I knew if he were in gastrointestinal pain or discomfort I think at the very least. I would be if I was pooping like that and had gas.. I just don't know. He hasn't wanted to snuggle since the last time I wrote that he did. He seems to be in pain of some sort. I can't take him to be seen until Friday.
