I see all these pictures on line of fat looking fluffy super long haired Persians. My little guy is almost one now- has fairly long hair. He weighs 10 pounds so he's not a puny kitty. I had his stomach shaved last fall as he had some bad knots. That hair is coming in great and is now back to about 3 inches in length. At what point will he be conbsired fully coated? His daddy had super long hair but his mom not so much. I want him to really look fabulous and want a great coat. I also have noticed that although at birth and early on his hair was truly white and the black was ebony, as he is aging the black has kind of a chocolaty look to it now. On his black parts the under coat is kind of a grayish brown. Is somehting lacking in his diet or is this normal?

I don't know how much help this is since I don't do solids, but I do know if a black spends to much tine in the sun it will change the color.

Even the coat of a strictly indoor Persian can be affected by the sun if they spend alot of time lounging in windows. This is especially true of solid blacks and black bi-colors.

Yes..I've read before that blacks can get that rusty look
to thier coats if they spend too much time lounging in the windows
in the sunshine!!

Hello,
it is true that black fur can turn a rusty color in the sunshine, I believe it is also called a fever coat.
On the other hand, the full coat is to be expected at around one of age I believe, but again, the season will play roll as well. In winter the coats are ususally fuller and plushier than in summer.
Do you have a picture of him?

As for coat length and fullness - that depends on a great number of things such as genetics, health, quality of diet, time of year (season), if neutered/spayed and grooming procedures. My boy, Boo looks almost like an exotic in the summer - can't show him at all for about 6 months of the year- part of that is hormone driven since he is whole and the girls are in heat during the summer, partly because of genetics.

When I first got Jacob I asked about his fur (it was in pretty poor shape...not long at all with a lot of ash and rust under his chin)....I remember Linda (fultonblue) told me that blacks are sort of notorious for their "funky fur"
Jacob has completley blossomed...his fur (before I shaved him) was super thick! The ash and rust is still there but he doesn't spend too much time in the sun.
A good friend of mine told me that when I first got him she worried...thought he was an ugly duckling but since he is so gorgeous now she feels comfortable telling me!
