Michelangelo got his stitches out today and the vet said that when we was neutering him and searching for his * that didn't drop, he ran into some "fat globules" Seems like our Michelangelo is too fat at 7 pounds 8 oz. :o
I gasped, all drama but, Dr M did not accept the excuse that he was 'big boned' or 'fluffy'.
So onto adult food and less of it.
Any keeping Michelangleo trim advice.
Normally around here, I give them all the Preventive cat food they want plus about a half of a small can twice per day for all 4 cats. They never finish the wet food. Our Birmans are slim, they are not tempted with the all-you-can-eat dry.....I also gave Isabella the task of dragging a string around the house every day for at least 15 minutes. I do this all the time. If I go to upstairs, I may as well drag the string along with me, ditto doing laundry or going to the loo. :cat:

The catfood I purchase from the vet clinic comes in tuna-can-sized tins. They each get the equivalent of one of those daily along with about 1/4 C of kibble (also from the vet clinic). They only get a maximum of 3 treats a day/4 on Sundays and holidays. Those do add up, you know! They don't even consume all the catfood most days and they are both slim. Lately, I have noticed that Humphrey has been eating kibble instead of the wet catfood, so I took the kibble away while the wet catfood is available.

I'd start by cutting back on treats and sloooowly reducing the volume of catfood available at a time. No table scraps.

A health club membership?! ;)

Seriously, activity is probably your best option. Do you have a cat tree or two? How about some of those motorized toys? Personally, I would just love to see a video of you and your string with Michelangelo in tow coming out of the loo.

Unfortunately that is also true for humans.

Sasha is not a very active cat, but a laser light sends her into a frenzy for at least 10-15 minutes. You might try that if the string doesn't do it. ;)

 Sadly, I am a tiny bit fluffy and big boned myself. But I am working on that too.

I am taking this seriously and do not want my guy to suffer with too much weight on his bones, so he WILL lose weight, or hopefully grow taller and bigger at the same weight.

Have laser, will go find. Thanks

Paula

How old is he?

Persians are not built the same way as other breeds or the domestics. Their bodies are very different.

Thanks for asking!

Michelangelo is 6 1/2 months old. Dr M said that when he was doing surgery on him searching for his undecended testical, ( I know it is spelled wrong, but the proper spelling nets a '*') he found fat globules. He said, he'd ask himself, is this his testical, NOPE IT'S FAT.

I can feel that he has sturdy and stocky bones and shorter legs, much different than the Birmans or my Siamese.

One way I cut back is on the treats I give him for being a good boy when I groom him. He will still sit beautifully for me and smile for one small treat at the end of our session.

I just want him to be healthy. I heart this guy!

He might be a little bigger for his age -- "normal" is one pound per month of age -- but persian boys can be bigger than average. All cats have those fat "globules" but persians are built different and have them in different places. I have a 7 month old boy here that I swear is around 8 lbs already............ he did well at his last show! :)No losing weight here! ;)

It just sounds like he might end up being closer to 10 lbs as an adult. There is no problem with that! Big persian boys are BEAUTIFUL!

Please don't worry about his weight until he's over a year old. He's still a kitten, and I have to admit I have never seen a fat persian kitten. They need to be solid -- short, cobby, tiny ears, big eyes.

Here is the link to the CFA persian breed standard -- the more they look like a "cube" the better!
http://cfa.org/documents/breeds/standards/persian.pdf

Enjoy that boy! He'll only get better!

I LOVE YOU!

Thank you for all the information, I just knew he was perfect just the way he is.......

And thank you for posting that link. That was an education.....Michelangelo is our first Persian and we think he is just fabulous.

Right now our heavy boned, boy with broad and deep chest, massive shoulders and rump with a wellrounded mid-section with NO EVIDENCE OF OBESITY, large round eyes in a large round head is chasing Donatello, our Birman, making that beautiful chirping noise. His long thick coat which accentuates his roundness in appearance, is flowing gracefully behind him. His ears small, though pointed tipped are tilted forward for speed. His brilliant eyes which are large and round, are bright in full pursuit.

And ya, if one pound a month is representitive of a typical Persian, then I say my dear, Dr M just may need a lesson in Persian.

You my dear, have made my day.

Not to sound like a weight loss magazine but it is really helpful to keep persian cats active. a healthy diet plus lots of movement go a long way.
