I know my rock has been the butt of some jokes and derision -- something about critters underneath, small, etc. Okay, I'll post a picture of my rock.

This is called Giant Rock and it's about 10 miles from here. It's the world's largest free-standing boulder, supposedly. It is 7 stories tall. Unfortunately about 15 years ago, it split and a small piece broke off, they think due to the camp fires people were lighting under that end.


In the 30s and 40s, a prospector dug a room under it and for a while there was a small restuarant under it. The room has since been filled in, but the tiled entrance and a few steps are still visible.

Quite a lovely rock and quite sizable.. could house many of us underneath it

Well just like I said McMansion Rocks are taking over. It is probably bigger than most houses, it looks like most of the forum could hang out in it

That is one fine rock Linda, but we wouldn't like to see you hanging out there on your own for too long.....

That's a pretty big rock alright! Can I come spend the winters with you? There should be plenty of room under that one.

It actually looks kind of cool in a surrealistic sort of way with the piece broken off and laying on the ground like that. I can imagine it being in a Salvador Dali painting.

That is amazing....too bad part of it broke off. Any idea why the restraunt is not there anymore?

The local 'colorful' story is that the owner was experimenting with some dynamite and blew himself up under there. I have no idea if that is true or not, but I suspect it was more due to the fact the rock is on public property. The restuarant was open in the late 60s, about the time this area was settled. (And that is the truth!)

I knew your rock wasn't just your ordinary garden variety....
