hi all 8-)

any ideas how i can get my golden and silver persian's to like being brushed / combed?

i brush them every other day for the past 6-9 months now, they are 8 & 12 months old now. i try 2 different combs, then offer a treat during and after, and they still hate it.

tx for any ideas --- art.

Hello,

instead of the combs, can you try using a brush? Get a natural bristle brush, this ususally give the grooming a more gentle feeling than a comb. Start with the brush and then use the comb only shortly on any matts you may find.
Also, you can give them treats while you brush them, keeps them entertained:)

Treats and a bristle brush are good ideas.

Here are a few more:

Limit grooming sessions to only 1 to 5 minutes at first and do only the parts they like groomed. With my Isabel, that was her head and for 2 minutes before she turned into  . After a week of that, I could do her head and a bit of her neck. Then her shoulders. Then.... well, now after 2 months of daily brushing and calm talking to her, I can do her entire body including her tummy, but not her tail. (The tail is next on my agenda.)

Try to use the same location, especially if you use treats.

Be calm, and don't react even when they bite. They bite so you will go away. If your hand goes away, they win. Yes, it hurts, but after a couple of sessions, they do give up.

If you hit a mat, stop. Don't pull it out -- carefully cut it out.

I use a brush on Bluie, then sneak in a comb every now and then, and have a dematting comb that she does not mind..

As Puffy gets older she likes getting brushed less and less. But, I think we've found a good compromise. Keep a brush or comb (I keep both, brush for the top coat and comb for the undercoat) handy always. I keep a set at the coffee table, by my couch and in the living room in her toy basket. Then, when PUffy comes over to sit on my lap on the couch to have a snuggle, I quickly grab the brushes and brush while I pet. It seems that when she is in a snuggly mood, the brushing is easier. :)

My suggestions:
1) Get this brush: http://www.petedge.com/catalog/product. ... ctId=43794
2) Brush an area first, then comb. Lightly mist with water every minute or so to cut back on static.
3) Groom every day rather than every other
4) Bathe every week - in my opinion the single biggest reason cats are hard to groom is because they're not immaculate. Bathing once a month (or less) is usually the culprit. Some people never bathe their cats. (I feel they're begging for trouble)

Good Luck!
