Hi I'm new here . Looks like a fantastic place to be. Need desperate help. I have three gorgeous babies 2 chinchillas one golden Persian . Now in full coat. All 18 mths old. I've made the silly mistake on relying on my lovely house sitter to groom them whilst I've been away for two weeks after Christmas. She couldn't cope now I have 3 matted babies . Trying desperately to keep up with dematting but it seems like getting a thread out of cotton wool. They love grooming to a point. So far sides and tummy are impossible. Last year I had the groomers come in every other day whilst away but it seemed to make them hate grooming so I am reluctant to get them back. I groom every day as a rule but this is a nightmare . Any tips please. I have all the right tools but now i am feeling like a useless groomer who can't keep up especially today when they have just come in out of the rain.

I have the same issue with Mats. This year they got so bad I took Simon and Mia to the Vet for a Lion Cut. The Vet reminds me that they don't have a professional groomer but they do the best they can. Sometimes they come back beautiful and sometimes NOT IE:(Mia's Chicken Leg haircut last year).
She knocks them out and starts shaving. You can see pictures of Mia in the Persian Talk section.
In my area groomers don't do cat's...something about insurance coverage.

Welcome Cherry. I think you have the right idea about just gently "pecking away" at those mats. Your kitties probably will tolerate grooming sessions that are short and frequent. I do hope you don't really let them outside! That will exacerbate the mat problem to be sure.

Welcome!!!

I know you probably don't want to hear this, but you might want to consider having a comb cut done on them. (This is not a shave down to nothing, but a haircut to about 1".) This would get rid of a lot of the mats and let you start fresh.

Getting wet, if you really meant the coming in out of the rain, will not help the matting. Wet mats get bigger!!

Thank you for all replies . My babies are allowed out and are free to feel the grass beneath their feet and explore our wonderful garden climb trees, chase butterflies and be natural cats . I know this may upset some but I think it's cruel not to let a cat be a cat. I have always had Persians and they have all lived wonderful long lives, one living to 19! . We all know the risks outside but rather that than never to feel the fresh air and smell the flowers.i was determined for these three babies never to have matted coats but alas I can't win even now with the children all left home etc. Ho hum onwards we try.
