I picked up an amazing little chocolate girl this weekend and on my way home I took her to show her off to my mentor. My baby kitty seemed to have flakes in her fur, which I thought was dandruff. However my mentor told me it was fungus, RINGWORM! I was so disappointed. I know that the breeder she came from had no clue about this, she is a very honest sweet lady. So now I am faced with treatment. I have talked to the emergency vet and will talk to my regular vet first thing tomorrow. But in the mean time I want to get some treatment started. I currently have the kitty confined, but she is very sad. I hate keeping her away from everyone. She has just the most wonderful personality and I want her to be able to run and play with everyone else. If you have ever had a kitty with ringworm, what did you use to treat it, and was it effective? How long did you confine? Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Ringworm isn't fun. BUT it isn't the end of the world.

Bathe her twice weekly in an antifungal shampoo (should be SUPER easy since she is a kitten). Also, add about 15 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract to the water. Please be careful not to get it in her eyes. You can also make a mixture of GSE and water to spray on her surroundings to decontaminate them.

I would confine her for at least two weeks. It takes a while to go away, but it also takes a while for it to no longer be contagious...

Good luck! Keep us updated!!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the info. I just love them so much, it is hard to confine them. On the up side its only 2wks = ) I also have found information about vaccinations for ringworm FeloVax? Has anyone used them? Are they effective?

Make sure your regular vet tests for ringworm. While Kira's treatment won't hurt the kitten at all, the same can't be said about the standard drugs used to treat ringworm. As I've said before, my vet will not use griseofulvin because of the toxic side effects in many cats. (Again, some cats have not problem with it, but some cats have MAJOR problems.)

Another thing to try is any of the over-the-counter athlete's foot creams like lotrimin. As long as the area you are treating is small (less than a dime) and you don't slop it on in huge amounts, it's safe. It works very nicely on ear tips and the insides of ears where it's not good to use shampoo!

BTW, I just wonder if a picture or two of the new kitten might help us all give you better advice? ;)

While I can't give you any advice on ringworm as I've been very fortunate in never having to deal with it, (knock on wood!) I just wanted to say how cute your chocolate girl is. As far as names go, she looks like a Cocoa Pebbles to me... you could call her "Pebbles" for short. :)
