Was zipping through FB and saw on the Specialty Purebred Cat rescue group that someone posted a red Persian up for adoption. He looks like he's at a kills shelter in OH. Someone in the are has offered to pull him. They did not even give him a name. Horrible. Not sure how much time he has. :cat: Please pass along. Thanks! Rose

He's no longer listed, so hopefully he is going to a good home. I wonder how these pedigree cats end up in shelters? It's not like someone is giving away persian kittens out of a box in the Walmart parking lot. someone most likely paid a breeder for one of these cats. I suppose we would all like to think it's just jerk owners, but I imagine there are also cases of heart ache in surrendering a companion persian puss.

I agree Dan -- but what really angers me is that most reputable breeders will take their cats back! I know I will and if for some reason I cannot then I work with the owners to find a suitable home that is not the local shelter. I mean let's face is there are certain circumstances that taking a pet back is just not possible...maybe my numbers are too high or the cat in question has a major health issue that could put my cats at risk. Shipping is difficult due to weather...things do happen...but I NEVER leave a previous owner to their own devises. I have only had 2 returned to me in 12 years...2 I have taken back into my care. But had one call me about the fact they had a new baby (this one really gets my goat but they called me at least so I said nothing ill about the situation)...her mother wanted the cats as they were siblings and they hated to separate them. I sent her mother a contract, spoke with her by phone and did receive updated pictures in their new home and she stays in contact with me. At least they were staying "in the family" if you will. Situations happen...but I am not about show anger if they call me -- even if I disagree with the reason. At least they are calling me! I just don't get it myself....why not contact the breeder?

Everyone of of my kids and grands have grown up with cats in the house. I just don't understand why you have to get rid of you beloved pet just because their is a new baby. But then again, that is just my thoughts...not intended to offend anyone.

well, we just learned someone will make up stories to 'get rid of' a gentle and loving matted persian on craig's list. :? I agree, breeders are a good resource.

Even the rescue shelter from which I adopted Humphie and Bogey required me to sign a contract that included a clause saying that if I could no longer care for the cats that I was to return them to the shelter for re-homing.

There are Persians and Himmies at that shelter that had to be given up because the owner was hospitalized or died or the like. Sometimes they come from raids on kitten mills or hoarders. Many, like my two, came in rough condition. At the moment, they are offering for adoption 2 Siamese, 2 Persian/Domestic mixes, and 8 Persians. Lately, it is "raining purebreds", more than they can house, so they are looking for fosters for healthy, normal cats. The majority at the shelter are always Persians or Himmies. Ragdolls, Sphinxes, Rexes, Bengals, Snowshoes, Siamese, etc. are usually quickly adopted if they find their way to the shelter. Persians are definitely high maintenance and, I guess, some people adopted without realizing that. And there are any number of backyard breeders who do not care where they place their kittens.
