Milo, our 7 year old much loved Chapelhouse Blue Persian, recently underwent a successful operation to remove what our vet described as a very rare psydo renal cyst. (The cyst was totally enclosing one of his kidneys and prior to the op, over a period of 2 months, was being drained every fortnight). Sadly his blood results show that he has stage 2 CKD. Initially he was prescribed Forteko (which he was very reluctant to take even when disguised crumbled in his food/treats). On a visit to the vets earlier this week the Forteko has been replaced by the newly released oral solution Semintra by the German company Boehringer Ingelheim. Milo has just taken the first dose quite easily in his food (long may this continue!). I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts/info on this new treatment?
I'd like to take this opportunity of letting you all know how much I enjoy regularly reading the Forum (even thought I've not been posting in the past).
Best wishes to everyone Yvonne (Cardiff,UK)

Welcome to the site Yvonne, and how nice to meet someone who has a rescue from Chapelhouse!!
I'm so sorry Milo is having issues, but it seems as though you and your vet are ontop of things..I hope the treatment for Milo is successful.
I've never heard of Semintra before, so did a wee search, and I see it is new.
I'll post the link here for others wanting to know what it is..

It's great that it is easy to give a cat...nothing worse than giving further stress on a sick kitty by trying to shove pill down his throat...
Give Milo some snugs from me,
Joan

I hope that Milo is doing well post his surgery and am sorry to read that he has stage 2 CKD though hope the Semintra oral solution will be helpful.
Alaska is in stage 3 CKD and she has been doing fairly well with fluids 3x/week thus far. As one would imagine we have our ups and downs with her condition though of late she has been eating well, active and quite a loving snuggly kitty.
Alaska is my 2nd Persian with CKD. Winston rip was probably further along when diagnosed than Alaska though this treatment has never been mentioned to me so I was unfamiliar with it. I wonder if a cat has to be in Stage 1 or 2 in order to benefit by it?
Wishing Milo the best with this treatment. Please keep us informed. Maria

Semintra is new (released this year) -- I've never heard or used it, so please keep updating us on how it goes for Milo. "It is licensed for the reduction of proteinuria (i.e. the unwanted loss of proteins via the urine) associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats." Looks interesting...
As for stage 2 CRF, I personally ignore the numbers. There's two school's of thought on treating CRF. One group looks at the numbers and treats the cat according to charts and protocols. So cats get various medicines because most cats at that stage need the meds.
The other group treats the symptoms the cat has regardless of the numbers. I'm in this group. I see little reason to treat a cat for problems that don't exist except on a page in a book. Maybe I'm shortening their lives, or maybe I'm not.

Thanks for your messages of support. Milo has been taking the Semintra for 8 days and even though its early days in the treatment I thought you'd like an update.
I've found it very easy to once a day add the small amount of measured fluid from the syringe provided to his food. It seems very palatable to him as he readily eats the initial very small portion of food with added medicine with no trouble whatsoever. This eliminates the stress I've personally previously experienced trying to crush and hide the tablets either in his food or treats - often failing miserably.
I'm delighted to report that his appetite has increased significantly to the extent that he's asking for food. I checked with the vet to see if the Semintra contained an appetite stimulant. He said it didn't and that he thought Milo is eating far more because he feels a little better.

He's generally more active and seems much brighter and very inquisitive. He's certainly talking more and interacting with us. We love this and actively encourage him - he (and his sister Mabel) are treated as they should be like royalty.
I appreciate that this is not a cure and it will be a few weeks yet before we have further blood tests done but so far we are delighted with Milo's progress and we hope and pray that it continues.
Best wishes Yvonne

Our oldest kitty has been on Fortekor for 3 years now and has been doing wonderfully on it. I wasn't even aware that there was something new offered now. Thanks for the info, and like Maria said, please keep us updated.
