I'm a firm believer that cats decide who they want to go to. I have no idea what The Dude did, or how he did it (maybe he has psykit powers) but he landed himself on the right doorstep.
I think you're really wonderful, especially as a first time pet owner (btw if Dude didn't give you a copy of the rule book yet, your actual title is "hooman slave" but I hear the feline world is trying to be more PC and shortened it to "hooman"). So many folks would have just taken him to a shelter in the morning.
One of my kits (non persian) was 3 or 4 mos old when we plucked her out of the gutter. She was pretty feral but got a clean bill of health so we brought her home. It's been years now and sometimes she is super cuddly and sometimes she flashes to her feral days and just wants her space. Not that Dude is feral, but if he craved attention but never got it in his old home, he may be a little conflicted now that all that lovin' is a regular occurence. Don't worry, he'll get the hang of the house/family especially once his eyes feel better and he can just relax and realize he hit paydirt....er, I mean...that he's HOME!
Good luck with your new baby!

Your little Dude cat is gorgeous! And he looks very content. Sounds like he landed in the right place ... with a family who is already mad about him. This is great! He looks like a flamepoint ...
